The reward miners earn per block is cut in half. At the next halving it drops from 3.125 BTC to 1.5625 BTC, halving the rate of new Bitcoin issuance. Halvings occur every 210,000 blocks, roughly every four years.
Historically, every halving has been followed by a major bull market and a new all-time high, with a lag of about 12 to 18 months. This is not guaranteed — four cycles is a small sample and the effect may weaken as the market matures.
